 Graham Thorpe’s Tragic Passing

Graham Thorpe, the former England cricketer, passed away at the age of 52. The news of his death has left the cricket world in mourning, with many paying tribute to his extraordinary contributions to the sport.

 Thorpe’s Illustrious Career

Thorpe made his international debut in 1993 and scored a century on his first Ashes appearance, becoming the first England player to do so in 20 years. He went on to play 100 Tests, scoring 16 centuries and featuring 82 times for the ODI side, as well as enjoying a 17-year career with Surrey. His final Test appearance came in June 2005 before he was omitted from that summer’s victorious Ashes series and called time on his international career.

 Thorpe’s Illness and Death

In May 2022, the Professional Cricketers’ Association shared a statement on behalf of Thorpe’s family, saying the England legend had “fallen seriously ill” and was in hospital receiving treatment. The statement also mentioned that his prognosis was unclear at the time.

Unfortunately, Thorpe’s illness ultimately led to his tragic passing. The England and Wales Cricket Board expressed their deep shock and sadness at the news, describing Thorpe as “one of England’s finest-ever batters” and a “beloved member of the cricket family.”

 Tributes and Legacy

Former England captain Michael Vaughan led the tributes to his former team-mate, describing Thorpe as a “great player and a brilliant team-mate” who had gone “far too young.” Surrey chief executive Steve Elworthy also expressed his condolences, saying that everyone associated with the club was “devastated by the tragic news of Graham’s passing.”

Thorpe’s legacy will live on through his remarkable achievements on the cricket field and his contributions to the sport as a coach. He is survived by his wife Amanda and four children, Henry, Amelia, Kitty and Emma.
